Simple Hand-Washing Can Prevent the Prevalence of Surgical Infections

The WHO identifies five “hand hygiene opportunities”:

  1. Before touching a patient;
  2. Before a clean procedure;
  3. After exposure to bodily fluids;
  4. After touching a patient; and
  5. After touching a patient’s surroundings.

These occasions represent five separate chances for anesthesiologists to decrease the risk of spreading healthcare-related infections, simply by washing their hands.
