New Video Shows Speeding, DUI Responsible For Fatal Wrong Way Car Accident In Miami

Speeding and driving under the influence (DUI) are two of the most dangerous driving behaviors. They are among the most common causes of car accidents in Miami, often resulting in serious, life-threatening personal injuries. Our Miami car accident lawyer represents victims and their families in these cases. We explain the role speeding and DUI played in a recent fatal wrong-way accident.

States Attorney General Release Video of Fatal Crash

A wrong-way car accident in Miami that occurred on the Palmetto Expressway Saturday, August 20, 2022, claimed the lives of five young people. The motorist responsible, who was driving a 2018 silver Infiniti Q50 in the wrong lane, was immediately arrested in the aftermath.

According to a September 12, 2022, Local 10 News report, the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office recently released a surveillance tape that left little doubt on how the crash occurred. The videotape, which was likely obtained from a nearby store or traffic signal, shows the driver going at least 80 miles per hour in the wrong direction on the Expressway prior to colliding head-on with the vehicle containing the victims.

In the immediate aftermath, he underwent DUI testing. The results showed a blood alcohol content (BAC) level of nearly double the legal limit. The State Attorney’s Office plans on using both the test results and the video as evidence in the criminal case against the driver, who suffered only minor injuries in the crash. He is currently under arrest and faces five charges of DUI manslaughter.

Speeding, DUI Increases Risk Of Dangerous Car Accidents in Miami

According to reports from the state Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), driving under the influence is a contributing factor in nearly 8,000 car accidents in Florida each year. Driving with even minor amounts of alcohol, illegal drugs, or medications in your system reduces vision, coordination, and reflexes, making crashes more likely to happen. It also impacts your judgment, making you more likely to engage in speeding and other dangerous driving behaviors.

Speed-related car accidents in Miami are among the most deadly types of crashes. The faster the driver is going, the greater the risks:

  • It makes drivers less likely to notice dangerous errors, such as driving the wrong way;
  • Gives them less time to respond to unexpected events or emergency situations;
  • Increases the force of impact when a car crash does occur;
  • Increases the severity of personal injuries suffered by victims and the odds that fatalities will happen.
