8 Most Dangerous Jobs in Florida Based on the Number of Occupational Deaths

While anyone, even an office worker, can get injured at work, the risk of injury is substantially higher for certain jobs. On-the-job accidents include slip and falls, electrocution, exposure to dangerous chemicals and substances, falls from heights, injuries caused by defective or malfunctioned products, assault, physical violence, and many more.

A recent investigation by 8 On Your Side Investigates reviewed data published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to identify the most dangerous jobs in Florida. The BLS calculated the number of occupational deaths for the most dangerous jobs in the State of Florida. The numbers are based on fatal workplace accidents in 2018, the latest year for which data is available.

Construction, Roofing, and Extraction (84 Deaths)

Construction jobs encompass a variety of occupations, including road construction and jobs in roofing. While any construction worker can be injured on the job, the risk of injury is significantly high for inexperienced and improperly trained workers.

If you are a construction worker who was injured at work, it is vital to consult with a Miami construction accident attorney to determine liability in your case. While workers’ compensation benefits are generally available to injured construction workers in Florida, you may also be entitled to additional compensation if third-party liability was involved.

Transportation and Material Moving (76 Deaths)

These workers are responsible for moving and transporting goods and materials in Florida and include delivery workers and truck drivers. Occupations in the transportation and moving industry are known to involve heavy loads and long hours, which contribute to workplace accidents and occupational deaths.

Grounds Cleaning and Maintenance (40 Deaths)

These occupations include jobs for landscaping, lawn care, maintenance, and cleaning. These jobs involve intense physical labor, not to mention that workers are often exposed to chemicals and other dangerous substances when performing their duties.

Repair and Installation (38 Deaths)

Jobs in repair and installation occupations include technicians and mechanics in various industries. These workers are required to work with electrical wiring, high voltages, and heavy equipment, which makes these occupations inherently dangerous.

Protective Services (17 Deaths)

Jobs in the protective service occupation include workers such as firefighters, police officers, probation officers, and others. Being surrounded by volatile situations, hazards, and dangerous people is what makes these jobs dangerous.

Sales (14 Deaths)

While you might be surprised to see sales jobs in the list of the most dangerous jobs in Florida, don’t be. Sales occupations involve workers going door-to-door and talking to complete strangers. When knocking on the door, the sales worker never knows who is going to open it and what to expect from them.

Agriculture, Fishing, Forestry (12 Deaths)

Injuries and illnesses in the agriculture, forestry, and fishing workforce are not uncommon because these occupations involve the use of heavy equipment and exposure to chemicals.

Production (10 Deaths)

Last but not least, people working in factories and other facilities that produce and manufacture goods and products are also at risk of work-related injuries and illnesses due to their exposure to chemicals and the use of heavy machinery and dangerous tools.
