The Dangers of Halloween

Its trick or treat time. In neighborhoods everywhere, kids will go door-to-door, filling their bags with candy. While Halloween is a holiday favorite among kids and adults alike, it also comes with its own set of dangers for parents to consider. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 3,500 Halloween-related accidents occurred last year, during the months of October and November. ABC News is reporting that one of the biggest Halloween hazards for kids is automobile accidents. Experts are hoping to bring awareness and promote safety precautions, but when these incidents do occur, responsible parties should accept their accountability.

Traffic incidents are reportedly among the highest rate of fatalities among children on Halloween. The Highway Safety and Traffic Administration ranks it as the third deadliest day of the entire year for pedestrians, and it ranks as the deadliest day for children. Its a dangerous combination of excited children running through the streets and preoccupied drivers who are not adequately paying attention. As reported in the article, when compared to other nights of the year, car accidents involving children are twice as likely on Halloween.

Experts suggest that parents accompany their children when out trick-or-treating. They also suggest placing reflective tape on costumes to increase visibility. But, adult drivers should also take precautions to ensure the safety of little ones who just want to have fun.

Driving Precautions

Progressive Insurance Company suggests the following precautions:

  • Be aware of your local trick-or-treat times – Most localities mandate specific times for kids to go door-to-door, usually between the hours of 5 and 8 pm, which according to Progressive, is the time when most vehicle and young pedestrian collisions occur. Take particular care during these times and keep an eye out for the little ones.
  • Slow down – Drive through the streets slowly, to allow yourself time for adequately stopping when necessary.
  • Refrain from passing parked cars – Drivers often stop for the purpose of dropping off trick-or-treaters. If you speed up to pass the car, you may hit a child.
  • Put the phone down – You need to pay attention and your cell phone is a distraction. Put it down and wait until you get to your destination before making that call.
  • Prepare for kids to dart out into the street at any time – They may not wait until they reach the corner before crossing and they may not stop even when they see your headlights. Proceed carefully when you see them walking down the sidewalks beside you.

Drivers who do not take reasonable precautions can cause serious and potentially fatal accidents. When this occurs, children and families are left to deal with extreme physical and mental pain, along with significant financial burdens.
