Back To School Safety Tips For Miami Parents: How To Reduce Your Child’s Injury Risks

School Crossing Guard at Work

For Miami parents, the start of a new school year is hectic. Between reviewing class schedules, reassuring nervous students, and making sure they have the proper school supplies, there may be little time to focus on anything else. Amidst all the other planning and preparations, take time to review transportation arrangements as well. Whether your child walks, bikes, takes the bus, or gets driven to school, following a few simple safety tips can help reduce injury risks.

Make Safety A Priority This School Year

Classes resume for children in the Miami-Dade County Schools on August 17, 2023. As a parent, you want to do everything in your power to ensure they are both prepared and protected. Safety is a top priority, and one of the biggest risks students face is transportation-related accidents. Depending on how they travel, the following tips can help prevent personal injuries:

Pedestrian Safety

Pedestrian accidents pose major risks to young people and, sadly, are common once children head back to school. You can help reduce the risks by reviewing their walking route in advance, encouraging them to use sidewalks and crosswalks at intersections, and reminding them to always look both ways before stepping into the road.

Bicycle Safety

Riding a bike is a popular option for children who live close to school. However, the same as with walkers, it is important to be aware of the risks. Make sure your child’s bike is in good working order, require them to wear a helmet and other protective gear, and look for bicycle routes that avoid the heaviest traffic.

School Bus Safety

While some parents are reluctant to rely on school buses as a way for their children to travel, the National Safety Council reports it is actually the safest way for students to get to and from school. To reduce potential risks, children should avoid rushing to bus stops, wait three giant steps back from the curb, and remain seated throughout the trip. Remind them to use extra caution when getting off and to never cross directly in front of the bus or assume the driver sees them.

Driving Safety

To better protect their children, many parents prefer to drive them to school. However, this actually poses the biggest personal injury risks. Parents should take care to avoid speeding and any kind of distracted or aggressive driving behavior during the trip, such as cutting other vehicles off, and should always drop students off and pick them up at school-designated locations.
