Five Common Myths About Drunk Driving In Miami

download (4)

While there is nothing wrong with having a few drinks, getting behind the wheel afterward poses a major threat. Drunk driving car accidents in Miami are common and can result in potentially devastating personal injuries. The end of summer is a common time for these crashes to happen, and each year a nationwide campaign aims at reducing the risks. Find out more about the risks and five common drunk driving myths that could endanger you and your passengers.

Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over

Each year in the weeks before and after Labor Day, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration sponsors the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. It raises public awareness and encourages local law enforcement in efforts to apprehend offenders. In 2023, the campaign runs from August 16 to September 4, 2023.

One of the ways to reduce the risks is to make people more aware of the problem. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), more than 300 drunk driving car accidents in Miami-Dade County happen. That averages to nearly one per day. Times you are most likely to encounter a drunk driver on the road include:

  • During the late evening and early morning hours;
  • On weekends;
  • On holidays or surrounding other special events.

Common Drunk Driving Myths

While most motorists are aware of the dangers of drunk driving, it continues to be a serious problem on local roads and a leading cause of car accidents in Miami. As part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign, Drive Sober Florida wants everyone in the state to be aware of some common drunk driving myths:

  1. “I only had a few beers”: Beer is just as likely to get you drunk and cause serious driving impairments as any other type of alcoholic beverage. In fact, a 12-ounce beer contains the same alcohol content as a five-ounce glass of wine or a 1.5-ounce shot of hard liquor.
  2. “I don’t feel drunk”: Alcohol impairs your judgment, causing you to underestimate the impacts.
  3. “They don’t look drunk”: Never let a friend get behind the wheel if they have been drinking. Just because they may seem fine, they could still pose a threat to themselves and others.
  4. “I’ll have coffee to sober up”: Only time can sober someone up. Coffee, energy drinks, fresh air, and even food do not make much of a difference.
  5. “I’ll walk/ride my bike instead”: Riding a bike or walking while under the influence is also dangerous. Your best bet is to get a ride with a friend or take an Uber or Lyft home.
