Miami Bicycle Accidents: Practical Ways To Keep Your Child Protected

download

Bicycling is a great way to get around Miami. Particularly in the fall, as temperatures cool off, Miami drivers are likely to encounter more bicyclists on the road. Many of these are local schoolchildren heading to and from classes, and it is important to slow down and be aware of the risks. Bike accidents in Miami are common and a leading cause of serious, potentially life-threatening injuries. If you are a parent, our Miami personal injury lawyer explains practical ways to keep your child protected.

Bicycle Accidents In Miami Pose Major Risks To Children

Bicyclists are among the most vulnerable road users, and young riders are the ones most at risk. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) reports that over 700 bicycle accidents in Miami-Dade County happen each year. Of these, close to half prove fatal. Sadly, children are among the most common victims.

A recent and tragic fatal bicycle accident at Miami-Gardens claimed the life of a young boy recently. According to an October 2023 Local 10 News report, he was struck at 6:20 a.m. on a recent school day while riding his bike in the 200 block of Northwest 199th Street.

A motorist in a white van was involved, stopped at the scene, and is cooperating with investigators. The police have not revealed any details surrounding the fatal crash or whether criminal charges will be filed. However, they are using the tragedy to raise public awareness of the dangers bicyclists face, particularly young riders, and the need to stay on the lookout for them on the road.

Ways To Keep Young Cyclists Safe

To protect bicyclists, drivers are encouraged to slow down, avoid distractions, yield the right of way at crosswalks, and stay mindful of local bike lanes. When they fail to take precautions or otherwise drive in a reckless manner, they can be held liable when bicycle accidents in Miami happen.

As a parent, there are some practical steps you can take to help reduce your child’s risks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends the following:

  • Make sure the bike your child is riding is suitable to their size;
  • Do bike maintenance checks regularly;
  • Require your child to wear an approved safety helmet at all times;
  • Use reflectors on the bike and install head and brake lights, particularly if they ride in the morning or early evening hours;
  • Advise them to follow local traffic laws, ride in bike lanes when possible, and otherwise go with the flow of traffic;
  • Warn them to remain vigilant at all times while riding, be aware of what is going on around them at all times, and never assume a driver sees them or will stop.
